Serious Games for Learning Life Skills - A Design Methodology

Making a game that is fun and teaches life skills is a challenging task. A methodology for Skill Serious Games can be embedded in games by bonding core principles and pedagogical approaches together. A practical example of this methodology's research is «Planti». A turn-based puzzle that teaches houseplant care.

I wanted to make a simple board game art style with miniature pieces aesthetics that is fast to produce without complex animations or 3D riggings. The puzzles are getting more and more complex, but the grid system and spider chart visualizations are hopefully simple and easy to understand.

Data visualization is introduced in a creative and interactive way. The music is adapted to the concrete situation of the game; every player will hear slightly different sounds. While playing the game, players earn houseplants care skills that can be used in real life, too.

Driven by the fusion of design and code focused on serious games, Roni is fascinated by how players can absorb knowledge and generate awareness from their engagement. During his time in the Israeli army, he led teams creating digital medical simulation games. He later earned a BSc in computer science with a specialization in game development, after which he worked for three years in a gaming company as a Unity developer. Roni is constantly developing independent games that address healthcare, music, and puzzle genres.
